Survey on honeybee pests and predators in Sidama and Gedeo zones of Southern Ethiopia with emphasis on control practices

ABSTRACT A survey study was carried out to identify the pests and predators of honey bee in Sidama and Gedeo zones during the year 2005 to 2006E.c in Dale and Shebedino woreda of Sidama zone and Kochere and Dilla zuria districts of Gedeo zone, and to asses indigenous control measures. Accordingly 20 beekeepers households per woreda were used for the structured questioner interview. Therefore a stratified random sampling method was used to select total 80 respondent households for the study. From the total of 80 sample households interviewed to generate qualitative and quantitative data on beekeeping, about 85.75% were male headed and the rest 14.5% were female headed with the average family size of 6 persons, with maximum and minimum family size of 7 and 2 persons, respectively. The experience of the respondents rests between 5-10 years (33.5%), greater than ten years (19.75%) and less than five years is (49.5%). ( ኤፍ.ቢ.ሲ ) የሲዳማ ብሔር ፍቼ ጨምበላላ የዘመን መለወጫ በዓልን በተለየ ሁኔታ ለማክበር ዝግጅት እየተደረገ ነው። በዓሉ በአለም ቅርስነት ከተመዘገበ በኋላ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ የፊታችን ሰኔ 23 እና 24 በዋናነት በሃዋሳ ከተማ በተለያዩ ዝግጅቶች ይከበራል፡፡ ይህን ተከትሎም በሲዳማ ዞን በሚገኙ የተለያዩ ወረዳዎች በዓሉ ለሁለት ሳምንት እንደሚከበር ተመልክቷል። የደቡብ ክልል ባህልና ቱሪዝም ቢሮ ምክትል ኃላፊ አቶ ለማ መለሰ እንደገለጹት፥ ቀደም ሲል በብሔሩ ተወላጆች ብቻ ይከበር የነበረው በዓል ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ሀገር አቀፍ  ይዘት እንዲኖረው አድርጎ ለማክበር ዝግጅት እየተደረገ ነው፡፡ የፍቼ ጨምባላላ በሃገሪቱ በማይዳሰስ ቅርስነት ከተመዘገበው የመስቀል በዓል ቀጥሎ ሁለተኛ ሆኖ በተባበሩት መንግስታት የትምህርት፣ የሳይንስና የባህል ማዕከል (ዩኔስኮ) የተመዘገበው ባለፈው ህዳር ወር መሆኑ ይታወሳል።

ECA Signs Memorandum of Understanding With Hawassa University

The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and Hawassa University (HU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a framework of cooperation between the two institutions. ECA chief, Carlos Lopes, signed on behalf of the Think Tank while Professor Yosef Mamo, President of Hawassa University, signed for the higher institution of learning. The two institutions are seeking cooperation in the areas of academic and research activities. "ECA is looking forward to deepening its relationship with Hawassa University to support the promotion of Africa's development agenda," said Mr. Lopes. "We are expanding our collaboration with African universities, and are therefore looking forward to a very strong collaboration with Hawassa University." As Ethiopian Premier League Draws to a Close, Violence Mounts

As the Ethiopian Premier League football club competition only four matches away from conclusion, violence and break down of discipline in different venues are increasing in alarming speed. The country's football governing body, the Ethiopian Football Federation, (EFF), issued a statement on Saturday warning clubs to strictly respect law and order. This statement was issued in the wake of the crowd disturbance on Friday, June 10, that led to the disruption of the match between Coffee and Hawasa City. "This was terrible, many people were hurt, property was damaged, the chairs used as weapons to attack rivals," the EFF said in the statement. The EFF further said that it has begun disciplinary proceedings against Coffee after the totally unacceptable scenes at Friday's Coffee-Hawassa City match.
